Anything but ordinary. That's putting it mildly when describing Avril Lavigne. A skater punk, a dynamic spirit, a true wild child. One of those rare creatures that began to captivate around the age of 2 with her voice and character. A small town girl who couldn't sit still in class but had the confidence and determination to go practically alone to hone her songwriting skills in New York City and Los Angeles. An amazingly direct and outrageous 17-year-old with everything it takes to become a star on her own terms. "I'm just going out on my own and I'm definitely going to be myself: I write what I feel, I never worry about what other people think," says Avril. "I will dress as I am, act as I am, and sing as I am."
Avril was born in Napanee, Ontario. As a middle child who "always wanted to be in the spotlight, I always knew that was the right thing to do," she says. "I remember when I was very young, standing on my bed as if it were a stage, singing at the top of my lungs and imagining thousands of people around me." She sang whenever and wherever she could, starting out in church singing gospel music and then festivals, she sang country music at fairs and talent shows until Arista Records discovered her.
At 16, she moved to Manhattan and began work on her debut CD. Avril was immersed in the creative process. "I love to write," he explains. "When I get angry and really need to get it out of me, I go to my guitar. Sometimes I feel like my guitar is my therapist.”
Although Avril practically lived in the studio during this time in New York, her efforts initially didn't pay off. “I started working with these really talented people, but I just didn't feel it; the songs didn't represent me," he admits. "Then they started talking about people writing for me, but I had to write myself. I had to make my music. It was a very stressful time, but I never thought of giving up.” Instead, he switched coasts. Los Angeles gave Avril the fresh start she needed.
